Gojkovic Meets with Russian Federation Council Speaker

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic, taking part in the 2nd Eurasian Women’s Forum in St Petersburg, met today with the Speaker of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matviyenko.

On the occasion, Gojkovic highlighted the excellent overall bilateral relations between the two countries based on the close cultural and historic ties and traditional friendship between the two nations.

Gojkovic said that this year marks the 180th anniversary of diplomatic relations, which are currently exceptionally good across the board. The Serbian Assembly Speaker said that the two countries share the same positions and opinions on a number of very important political issues, especially those of common interest for Serbia and the Russian Federation, adding that Serbia would never vote against Russia’s interests just like Russia has never voted against Serbia’s.

Matviyenko said that this relationship is of exceptional importance for the Russian Federation and that it is of paramount importance to keep developing it, which the two presidents, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and Aleksandar Vucic, she added, greatly contribute to.

Gojkovic and Matviyenko agreed that the cooperation between the two parliaments is very good, stressing that the coming meeting of the Serbia-Russia parliamentary commission in October in Moscow would help intensify relations and that the parliaments are following the talks between presidents Putin and Vucic.

The two heads of parliament also spoke about advancing cooperation at the multilateral level, especially in the PACE, IPU, CSTO PA, PABSEC and OSCE PA.

The Serbian National Assembly Speaker then met with the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Gabriela Cuevas Barron who is also taking part in the 2nd Eurasian Women’s Forum and discussed the continuation of the successful cooperation with the organization, stressing that the National Assembly would continue to champion the common goals promoted by the IPU.

Gojkovic and the IPU President also spoke about Serbia hosting one of the IPU’s coming activities, in view of the already successfully co-organized Regional Seminar on Sustainable Development Goals and Serbia’s 127-year-long membership in the IPU.
