Gojkovic Meets with President of Moroccan House of Representatives

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with the President of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco Habib El Malki, in official visit to Serbia.

Gojkovic and El Malki stressed that Serbia and Morocco share a firm friendship as evidenced by their 60-year history of diplomatic ties, with the President of the Moroccan House of Representatives adding that the two countries have managed to maintain a high level of relations and build them with mutual respect despite difficulties.

Gojkovic and El Malki signed a Memorandum of Understanding to help further these friendly relations and reaffirmed their commitment to develop the parliamentary cooperation at highest level, between parliamentary working bodies, friendship groups and support services, stressing that this opens a new chapter in the relations between the two national parliaments.

The officials agreed that it is also important for the parliamentarians to develop cooperation within international organizations, to exchange information and consult on topics of common interest as envisaged by the Memorandum of Understanding, and went on to arrange a visit of the Serbian Parliamentary Friendship Group with Morocco to the Kingdom of Morocco as the first under the auspices of the Memorandum.

Gojkovic thanked the President of the Moroccan House of Representatives for his country’s consistent support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty i.e. Serbia’s policy on Kosovo-Metohija based on international law and the UNSC Resolution 1244. Gojkovic thanked Morocco for its friendship, understanding and support of Serbia’s side in international organizations like in the instance of so-called “Kosovo’s” UNESCO bid and went on to point out the dire circumstances of the Serbian cultural heritage in Kosovo-Metohija which is being systemically destroyed.

El Malki said that the Kingdom of Morocco does not recognize the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija because self-declared states cannot be recognized in the face of well-known historical and geographic facts as this could pose a danger for other countries in the world, stressing that all problems can be solved through dialogue and by respecting international norms.

The President of the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco said that his country supports Serbia’s efforts to join the European Union and respects Serbia’s stance on the migrant crisis because Serbia’s approach has been one of humanity and solidarity at a time when this issue casts a rift between the European countries.

Gojkovic and El Malki discussed Serbia’s cooperation with the African Union and Gojkovic praised Morocco’s re-joining the organization stressing that Serbia values its cooperation with African countries as evidenced by the fact that the Serbian Assembly is the only European parliament to have an Agreement of Cooperation with the Pan-African Parliament.

Gojkovic and El Malki also spoke about economic cooperation, the importance of ratifying the Air Transport Agreement which would open up the possibility to establish a direct flight, as well as fostering strong agricultural, economic and cultural ties between cities.
