Gojkovic Meets Iranian Parliament Speaker

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali Larijani whom she thanked for the Iranian parliamentary delegation’s participation in the 141st IPU Assembly in Belgrade.

Gojkovic said that the political relations between Serbia and Iran are good and Serbia is ready to develop the overall cooperation further, thanking the guest for his country’s support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty viz. the Kosovo-Metohija issue.

Larijani said that the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue to support Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and has supported Serbia’s stance in the international organizations of UNESCO and INTERPOL.

Larijani said that the two countries enjoy good and friendly relations, remarking that the Serbian Assembly Speaker’s visit to Iran was substantive and truly important for the strengthening of parliamentary and overall relations.

Gojkovic and Larijani emphasized the importance of the Belgrade IPU Assembly’s overreaching theme of strengthening international law, highlighting the parliamentarians’ vital role in guaranteeing the preservation of international law.

Larijani thanked the Assembly Speaker for the invitation to the IPU Assembly, congratulating on its successful and good organization, testimony to Serbia’s ability to organize such an important event. Gojkovic said that the fact that the IPU Assembly is attended by 77 parliament speakers and 66 deputy speakers, as well as over 2000 delegates, is a great honour for Serbia that pursues and independent politic and is the only country in Europe not to sanction against any MPs, representatives of the people from around the world.

Larijani invited the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to visit the Islamic Republic of Iran to help promote cooperation, stressing the importance of parliamentary cooperation both at the highest level and at the level of working bodies and friendship groups. The two parliament speakers agreed that there is ample potential to advance economic cooperation and trade in the coming period.
