French Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee Member Olivier Cadic Visits National Assembly

The Head of the PFG with France Natasa Vuckovic and DS PG Deputy Head Balsa Bozovic met today with Senator Olivier Cadic, member of the French Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee, to discuss Serbia’s European integration process, improving political and economic cooperation between Serbia and France and the Brexit fallout.

The Head of the PFG with France Natasa Vuckovic gave Senator Cadic a brief overview of Serbian society stating that as an opposition MP she believes that the government reforms are going very slowly. She added that Serbia should be a modern, democratic country grounded in the rule of law, with good and ordered institutions where the parliament plays the lead role. Vuckovic pinpointed freedom of the media and independence of the judiciary as the biggest problems of the Serbian society today, also mentioning the need to change the Constitution and redefine the position of the judiciary in the legal system.

Vuckovic added that she supports the Belgrade-Pristina dialogue, regional cooperation and the EU pre-accession talks, but insists that the internal policy should be European and instil European values and the EU acquis into Serbian society. She added that she would like to see France take more part in the economic and cultural sphere in the country.

DS PG Deputy Head Balsa Bozovic briefed Senator Cadic on the National Assembly’s work and the conditions under which the opposition is operating.

Senator Olivier Cadic said that the EU is still a power for peace at the international level. He said that France should fully concentrate on Europe and the countries of the Western Balkans which belong in it. Cadic said he was sure that becoming an EU member state would be good for Serbia, just as it would be good for the EU itself and added that she hoped more French companies would invest in Serbia in the future.
