Fourth Sitting of the Committee on the Rights of the Child

At the sitting held on 9 October the members of the Committee on the Rights of the Child were informed about the initiative “Our child – our decision” – Proposal for the amendment and modification of the Family Law.

The initiative was presented by Tamara Skroza who said that under the current Family Law the parents do not have the right to set potential guardians for their children in case of family tragedy, so the decision about the children without close family whose parents were killed in an accident or died of natural causes lies in the hands of social welfare centres. Despite the fact that said children might have in their vicinity family or people who would accept the responsibility of caring for them, these children often end up in foster families or homes for children without parental care.

The initiative was launched to offer the parents the chance to set guardians for their children during their lifetime, with the official social welfare centre being the final decision-making authority.

The Committee members agreed to endorse this initiative or any other aimed at improving the legislation and supported the parents’ right to voice their opinion when it comes to the future of their children.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Deputy Chairperson Nada Lazic and attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Ana Karadzic, Tatjana Macura, Milanka Jevtovic Vukojicic, Milena Corilic, Natasa Sp. Jovanovic, Marko Djurisic, Dr Sanda Raskovic Ivic, Gordana Comic, Jelena Mijatovic, Dr Danijela Stojadinovic, Dr Radoslav Jovic, Marija Jevdjic, Sandra Bozic and Djordje Milicevic.
