Fourth Sitting of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region
At the sitting held on 23 July, the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region discussed the failure to set up the Directorate for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region. Foreign Ministry Secretary Veljko Odalovic informed the Committee members of the Ministry’s activities relating to the establishment of the Directorate which were, he said, entering the final stage. Odalovic explained that the Directorate had not been set up yet due to procedural problems – waiting for the Government’s decision regulating the Directorate’s operation which had only recently been passed.
Committee Chairman Dr Janko Veselinovic then proceeded to brief the Committee members on the meeting with PACE member Andrea Rigoni and the Committee’s other activities in the previous period.
The sitting was attended by the Head of the Nis City Office for Cooperation with the Diaspora Tamara Ciric who presented the work and basic activities of the Office, set up in 2013, aimed at strengthening ties with the Diaspora in the areas of culture, education, sport, economic cooperation and status issues.
The Committee members also discussed how to address the problem of voting by the diaspora, stressing the need to urgently establish a database on citizens living in the diaspora and emphasising the importance of furthering communication with the diaspora.
The sitting was chaired by Dr Janko Veselinovic, Committee Chairman.
