Fourth Parliamentary Green Forum: Sustainable Systemic Solution to Abandoned Pets Problem
Humane care for abandoned pets is an obligation and standard imposed by modern society the European Union will remind us of because as many as three negotiation chapters touch on the problem, noted the participants of the fourth forum of the Green Parliamentary Group.
In the slew of flaws of the housing and treatment of abandoned dogs and cats, the participants listed as most strident inadequate infrastructure, inefficient regulations that are badly implemented, with a special focus on the humane placement of dogs into asylums and euthanisation as prescribed by law.
MP Ivan Karic told the attending NGO representatives that their inclusion in the drafting of adequate animal protection laws is essential and suggested organising a public hearing on the issue.
The participants were also presented an overview of the situation in local self-governments, the role of civil society in the proposal of by-laws, and recommendations for a lasting solution to the problem. On the behalf of the civil sector, the participants of the meeting were addressed by Natasa Vukmirovic of NGO Link, Milica Rankovic of NGO Phoenix and Milja Krivokuca on the behalf of the organisation Animal Hope – Riska.
