A delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, headed by the Committee’s chairperson, Gordana Comic, met a group of MPs, journalists, and NGO activists from Britain, Greece, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia, whose visit to Belgrade had been organised by the British Council.
Speaking at Assembly House, Martin Linton MP presented the results of a project prepared as part of the United Kingdom – South-Eastern Europe Forum aiming to improve parliamentary co-operation between European countries.
The discussion saw an exchange of opinions on pressing political issues, primarily Kosovo and Metohia and co-operation with the Hague Tribunal. Serbian delegation members particularly emphasised the importance being given to European integrations, and the commitment by the Serbian Parliament and Government to creating conditions for this.
Ms Comic told the visiting delegation about the major changes that have occurred in the past six years to democratise Serbia’s society. ‘Faced with difficulties dating back decades’, she said, ‘our country has endeavoured to dissolve stereotypes and send to the world a picture of the Serbia we are building now’.
Committee members stressed the importance of co-operation with the British Parliament, and the need for British MPs to be made aware of the positions of the Serbian Parliament and Government regarding key political issues – primarily that of Kosovo and Metohia – as they will affect their solution through the UN Security Council and the Contact Group.-
