Foreign Affairs Committee Members Meet with Chairman of Romanian Parliament's European Affairs Committee

Foreign Affairs Committee Deputy Chairperson Alaksandra Djurovic and Committee member Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic met today with the Chairman of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies' Committee on European Affairs Victor Ponta, as part of his visit to the National Assembly.

Welcoming the guest, Deputy Chairperson Alaksandra Djurovic highlighted the importance of the parliamentary cooperation between Romania and Serbia. She thanked Romania for its principled stance and support of Serbia's territorial integrity as regards the status of AP Kosovo-Metohija.

Djurovic also thanked Romania for its support for Serbia's European integration, but expressed worry about the EU's inadequate response to the bad messages sent by Pristina politicians. It would be very significant if the EU took concrete steps to encourage Serbia along its European path which would boost Serbian citizens' support for the EU accession.

Regional cooperation is also very important to Serbia, said Djurovic, outlining the country's activity in regional forums and initiatives, with a special focus on the Berlin Process.

Expressing support for Serbia's European integration, the Chairman of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies' Committee on European Affairs Victor Ponta said that it is not just that Serbia that needs Europe, Europe needs Serbia, too, for the stability of the Western Balkan region and all of Europe. Ponta said that in the next two years three neighbouring countries - Bulgaria, Austria and Romania, would preside over the EU Council and Serbia should utilize this to its advantage. The Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs emphasized the importance of the fact that the majority of political forces in Serbia support EU accession.

The officials also spoke about the global fight against terrorism and the migrant crisis challenges.
