Foreign Affairs Committee Meets with Russian Federation Council Delegation

The members of the Foreign Affairs Committee met today at the National Assembly House with a delegation of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs and Committee on Defence and Security. The National Assembly delegation comprised Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic, Stefana Miladinovic, Jovan Palalic and Nikola Savic.

Foreign Affairs Committee member Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic said that the two countries’ traditional friendship is evidenced by this year’s 180th anniversary of diplomatic relations. He also pointed out that the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Russia is the largest at the National Assembly which just goes further to show that Serbia considers Russia a true and great friend.

Stojmirovic thanked the Russian Federation for its principled stance on the unilaterally declared independence of “Kosovo” and support in international organizations.

Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic informed the guests that 2019 will be the 800th anniversary of the autonomy of the Serbian Orthodox Church, hoping that Serbia will on the occasion be visited by high Russian dignitaries, when the Church of St. Sava will also be officially completed and opened thanks to, among others, funds secured by Russia. The Church of St. Sava is a powerful symbol of the Serbian state and Orthodox Christianity in the Balkans.

Stojmirovic went on to say that Serbia pursues an autonomous foreign policy in the interest of its citizens and despite the many pressures it did not join the EU sanctions against Russia. He added that Serbia is a military neutral country and does not intend to join NATO.

The Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Andrei Klimov said that though geographically distant the two countries share a history, religion, cultural heritage and good bilateral relations. Klimov stressed that the two countries’ cooperation is excellent and assured the guests that Russia will remain firm in its decision not to recognize the self-declared state of Kosovo and continue to support Serbia in international organizations.

The Committee members were also addressed by the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security Alexei Kondratyev.

MPs Stefana Miladinovic, Jovan Palalic and Nikola Savic thanked Russia for its principled stance on Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and its support in international organizations, stressing that Serbia would under no circumstances impose sanctions on the friendly country.
