Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman and Members Meet with Czech Senate Delegation

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic thanked the Czech delegation for the visit, highlighting the friendly relations between the two countries and the importance of the ever improving interparliamentary cooperation, as evidenced by the National Assembly 22-strong PFG with the Czech Republic.

Obradovic said that though Serbia’s chief foreign policy goal is EU accession, so is continued good cooperation with the Russian Federation and the Republic of China. He said that in the last few years Serbia has become an ardent promoter of peace, stability and cooperation in the region and objected to the EU’s lack of reaction to the rising propagation of the idea of Greater Albania by Kosovo and Albanian officials.

Obradovic said that there are no outstanding issues between Serbia and the Czech Republic, except for the status of Kosovo i.e. the fact that the Czech Republic had recognized the unilaterally declared independence of the southern province which is unacceptable for Serbia. Obradovic drew attention to the fact that Pristina does not abide by the Brussels Agreement as seen in their hindering the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities. He also said that there is evidence of the presence of Islamic extremists on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija, which is a threat not just for Serbia and the region, but for all of Europe.

The Chairman of the Czech Senate’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security Frantisek Bublan emphasized how important it is to resolve the outstanding issues, normalize relations and establish cooperation between Belgrade and Pristina. He believes that this process takes time. As an example he mentioned the military cooperation between the Czech Republic and Germany which was met with disapproval by the older citizens of the Czech Republic, but not the young generations who have to memories from the World War Two period.

The meeting also touched on the possible establishment of an EU army and the degree of cooperation between the Serbian Armed Forces and NATO.
