Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Meets with Newly-Appointed Japanese Ambassador to Serbia

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Borko Stefanovic met today with the newly-appointed Ambassador of Japan to Serbia, Akira Imamura.

The officials assessed the previous bilateral relations and cooperation between the two countries as positive and good, with mutual readiness for their improvement, both on the economic and political levels. Both sides expressed interest in strengthening parliamentary cooperation, especially at the level of working bodies and parliamentary friendship groups.

Ambassador Imamura said that Serbia can count on Japan's support in the European integration process, because the EU is a partner with which it shares the same values, as well as on his country's support for the Western Balkans as Japan attaches great importance to regional cooperation, peace and stability, which lead to regional economic development and progress.

Stefanovic welcomed the Japanese significant investments in Serbia and the effects of Japan's presence in our country, ranging from direct investments to numerous donations and humanitarian aid that Japan provided to Serbia. He opined that economic ties between the two countries should be strengthened, as well as political relations. He also welcomed the announcement of new investments by Japanese companies in Serbia, deeming them a positive signal, not only for our country, but for the entire region as well. Stefanovic stressed that Serbia's goal is EU membership, assessing that this is achievable by 2030, and thanked Japan for supporting Serbia's European path.

The officials expressed concern about the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, with the assessment that it requires de-escalation, return to dialogue and the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities.

The Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman of the and the Japanese Ambassador also discussed the situation in Ukraine, as well as other current topics, with Stefanovic expressing his personal opinion that it is necessary for Serbia to align its foreign policy with the EU's as soon as possible, especially with regard to the introduction of sanctions against the Russian Federation. Stefanovic also expressed the view that the problems in the external, economic and security situation in Serbia are, in his opinion, exclusively the product of wrong and harmful policies and actions of the authorities in Serbia.
