Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Meets with Moroccan Ambassador to Serbia

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic met today, in the National Assembly House, with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the Republic of Serbia H.E. Mohammed Amine Belhaj.

Obradovic emphasized the excellent parliamentary relations between the two countries, mentioning a large number of mutual visits at the highest level in the past few years, among them the visits of the Serbian and Moroccan Speakers of Parliament. He thanked Morocco for its principled position of the non-recognition of the self-proclaimed state of Kosovo and added that respect for a state’s territorial integrity and sovereignty is of the utmost importance for the international community. The Committee Chairman said that any problem of this kind can be solved only through dialogue and respect for international law. Obradovic thanked Morocco for supporting Serbia by preventing so-called Kosovo to become a member of international organizations, as was the case with UNESCO, Interpol and others. Serbia and Morocco should exchange information and cooperate more in the work of various international organizations such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Council of Europe, La Francophonie and others. The Serbian Assembly’s 36-member Parliamentary Friendship Group with Morocco is proof of the good relations between the two countries. Obradovic expressed confidence that parliamentary relations would continue to deepen as soon as the epidemiological situation allows. He also stated that the two countries should improve economic cooperation, adding that the National Assembly will support any governmental initiatives in this area.

H.E. Mohammed Amine Belhaj thanked the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and agreed with his belief that the two countries’ great friendship lies in trust, mutual support and harmonization of opinions in important political positions, such as the territorial integrity and sovereignty of a country. He opined that the legal framework of both countries has been improved in the past few years and that the friendship between Serbia and Morocco has set the groundwork for a strategic partnership. He added that two memoranda of understanding are being prepared, concerning customs breaks and development of the two countries. He said that Morocco opposes any unilateral declaration of statehood and added that it had a great influence on the 13 African countries that withdrew the recognition of the unilaterally declared state of Kosovo.

He urged Serbia to support a political, pragmatic and sustainable compromise solution for Morocco, which would lead to ultimate stabilization and peace.

The officials agreed that cooperation could be deeper in the fields of education, defense, agriculture and modern technologies, and exchanged experiences concerning the fight against the coronavirus, in which both countries have achieved enviable results.
