First Meeting of the National Assembly - Hellenic Parliament Cooperation Commission

The National Assembly - Hellenic Parliament Cooperation Commission had its first meeting on 30 November 2018 in Thessaloniki.

The National Assembly delegation headed by Commission co-chair National Assembly Deputy Speaker Veroljub Arsic, comprised the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic, Chairperson of the Committee on the Economy, Regional Development, Trade, Tourism and Energy Snezana B. Petrovic, member of the European Union-Serbia Stabilisation and Association Parliamentary Committee Vesna Markovic, member of the Committee on Spatial Planning, Transport, Infrastructure and Telecommunications Ognjen Pantovic and substitute member of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Sandra Bozic.

The parliamentarians talked about the relations between the states in the region, European prospects of the Balkans, energy and infrastructure cooperation and the migration challenges the countries in the region are faced with.

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Veroljub Arsic said that the Commission’s chief goal is to create suitable conditions for the further development and strengthening of parliamentary cooperation in line with the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2012. The Commission aims to promote, expand and deepen political, economic, social and cultural relations and provide support for Serbia’s EU accession process, as well as advance cooperation and coordination between the parliamentarians in the context of participation in international parliamentary organizations and other international parliamentary activities, Arsic concluded. He went on the stress the symbolism of achieving this highest form of interparliamentary cooperation on the centenary of the end of WWI when the two nations confirmed their closeness in the most critical moment for the Serbian people and state.

The Commission was established under the Memorandum of Cooperation signed in April 2017 by National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic and the President of the Hellenic Parliament Nikolaos Voutsis.
