Fifty-Second Sitting of the Committee on Science and Technological Development

At the fifty-second sitting, the Committee on Science and Technological Development reviewed the Information on the rationalisation of the network of institutes in the Republic of Serbia. The sitting was attended by Assistant Ministers of Education and Science Prof. Dr Tibor Sabo and Dr Radosav Cerovic and State Secretary at the Ministry of Education and Science Prof. Dr Radivoje Mitrovic.

Outlining the Information on the rationalisation of the network of institutes, the ministry representatives stated that Serbia has 56 institutes which are independent institutions. Although Serbia does not have many researchers it has a large number of small scientific institutes whose areas of expertise overlap and which have to deal with high expenses and salary payments. That is why the institutes should be institutionally strengthened, which makes rationalisation a necessity. The conditions for it are set forth in the Law on Scientific Research Activities.

The Committee members opined that the scientists and scientific institutes should be consulted more on economic development issues.

In the continuation, the Committee members agreed to visit the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, as well as the Institute for Hops and Medicinal Plants in Backi Petrovac in September 2011.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Srboljub Zivanovic.
