European Integration Committee Members Talk to Italian Senate Delegation

European Integration Committee Chairman Aleksandar Senic and the Committee members met today at the National Assembly House with a delegation of the Italian Senate headed by the Chairman of the Committee on EU Policies, Senator Vannino Chiti.

European Integration Committee Chairman Aleksandar Senic thanked the members of the Italian Senate’s Committee on EU Policies for initiating the adoption of the Resolution in support of opening EU membership negotiations with Serbia and the Italian Senate for the adoption of the Resolution asking the EU to open negotiations chapter 32 – financial control in the negotiations with Serbia, which, he added, all the Committee members voted in favour of. Senic stressed that Serbia values Italy’s unremitting support of its road to EU membership. He briefed the members of the Italian Senate delegation on the National Assembly’s duties and activities relating to the Euro-integration process, mentioning the adoption of the Resolution on the role of the National Assembly and principles in the negotiations on the accession of the Republic of Serbia to the European Union and the Decision on the procedure for discussing the negotiating position proposal in the negotiation process on the accession of the Republic of Serbia to the European Union, passed by the European Integration Committee, and underlining the intensive cooperation the National Assembly Committee enjoys with the civil sector. He thanked Italy for the efforts it puts into making sure chapter 32 is opened by the end of the year which would formally launch the negotiations process on Serbia’s accession to the EU. Senic also thanked Italy for the humanitarian aid it sent Serbia after the May floods.

Senator Vannino Chiti said that Italy firmly believes Serbia should become a member of the European Union, adding that all the political powers are united in that belief, evidenced in the adoption of the Resolution on the opening of negotiation chapters with Serbia. Chiti opined that the European Union should admit the Western Balkan countries as soon as possible, where, he added, Serbia plays the central role in the maintenance of stability. He stressed that Italy would continue to support Serbia in its progress to the European Union.

Senator Chiti said that the bilateral relations between Serbia and Italy are very good, emphasising the importance of promoting interparliamentary, cultural, economic and educational cooperation.

European Integration Committee members Dusica Stojkovic and Dr Aleksandra Tomic agreed that Italy is an exceptionally important foreign trade partner to Serbia and thanked the country for its support of Serbia’s EU accession efforts.

The meeting was also attended by European Integration Committee members Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic, Dr Aleksandra Tomic, Bojan Kostres, Laszlo Varga, Dusica Stojkovic, Dr Ivan Bauer, Biljana Pantic Pilja and Irena Aleksic.
