Eighth Sitting of the Culture and Information Committee

At the sitting held on 3 October, the Culture and Information Committee considered the Republic Broadcasting Agency 2013 Activity Report.


The Report was presented by the President of the Republic Broadcasting Agency (RRA) Council Goran Karadzic who, in the segment on broadcasting licenses, said that in the reporting period the RRA had issued broadcasting licenses to three regional TV stations, two regional radio stations, 12 TV stations and 13 radio stations covering a local area. In 2013, the RRA also issued 344 cable broadcasting licenses.

The Report also states that the Council had decided to revoke 21 radio and TV broadcasting licenses for non-payment of fees. Out of the rest of the Council’s duties, the Committee members were presented the activities relating to the supervision of the work of broadcasters and preparation of reports on the operation of public services. Karadzic also said that the Council had processed the petitions and complaints directed to the regulatory body (524 petitions and 10 complaints) and issued notices and warnings to certain broadcasters.

The Report also includes a financial segment, data on the business surplus achieved and a breakdown of 2012 and 2013 income and expenses.

In the ensuing debate, the Committee members and other MPs, RRA members and representatives of the Ministry of Culture and Media discussed the RRA decision-making process relating to the broadcasters’ complaints and implementation of appropriate measures toward the broadcasters. They also discussed whether there is media censorship in Serbia and the principles employed to grant media frequencies.

Following the discussion, the Committee members adopted the Republic Broadcasting Agency 2013 Activity Report.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairperson Vesna Marjanovic.
