Eighteenth Sitting of the Local Self-Government Committee

At the sitting held today, the Local Self-Government Committee considered, in principle, the Bill amending and modifying the Law on Local Elections, submitted by the Government.

The sitting was attended by Dusko Radakovic, State Secretary at the Ministry of Human and Minority Rights, Public Administration and Local Self-Government and an associate, as well as Marko Tomasevic, representative of Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities.

The Ministry representative said that the Bill does not introduce any essential changes, but rather harmonises the Law with the adopted Law on Organisation of Courts, Law on Political Parties and Law on Administrative Disputes, as well as the decision of the Constitutional Court that the mandate should belong to the councilmen.

In the ensuing debate the Committee members opined that the Law on Local Elections should be amended so that the citizens might elect their representatives in the local assemblies directly rather than the election be made via the political parties’ electoral lists which might result in certain local communities lacking representation.

The Committee members adopted the Bill amending and modifying the Law on Local Elections in principle. Committee Deputy Chairman Mihailo Puric was elected Committee rapporteur to the National Assembly session.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Jovan Palalic.
