Economic Cooperation between Serbia and Turkey Intensifies

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Turkey Prof. Dr Zoran Dragisic met with the delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Grand National Assembly headed by Chairman Volkan Bozkir, currently in official visit to Serbia, at the National Assembly House today.

Dragisic welcomed the Turkish parliamentarians emphasizing the importance of the good relationship and mutual support between the two countries. He said that the economic cooperation between Serbia and Turkey is on the rise, adding that Turkey is becoming a very important economic partner for Serbia. The PFG Head also highlighted the excellent political cooperation based on the strong relationship between the two countries’ presidents, adding that Serbia never hesitated to support Turkey in challenging situations and that Turkey has a true friend in Serbia.

Bozkir thanked the hosts for the hospitality the delegation felt in the meetings with the Serbian dignitaries. He said that Serbia and Turkey’s strategic partnership should be maintained, in addition to the frequent presidential visits, by intensive parliamentary exchanges, at least twice a year, he opined.

The officials also spoke about Kosovo-Metohija, where Dragisic said that a sustainable solution for the Albanians and Serbs living there has to be found because if there is only a technical agreement than the two sides have not done their best. Bozkir said that as the biggest country in the Western Balkans Serbia plays an important role in maintaining peace and one that it is playing very well.

They also agreed that educational cooperation could also stand to be improved through a more intensive student exchange and spoke about the construction of the Belgrade-Sarajevo highway which they agreed is more than just an infrastructural project as it would also strengthen cultural ties.

The meeting was also attended by Aleksandar Cotric, who said that the spirit of Turkey is still very much alive in the Serbian culture and language, for example in the names of various parts of Belgrade which still bear names originating from the Turkish language.
