Drecun Receives Delegation of Kenyan National Defence College
Milovan Drecun, Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Countries of Sub-Saharan Africa, spoke to the students of lecturers of the Kenyan National Defence College about the National Assembly’s work, Serbia’s foreign policy efforts and official stance on Kosovo-Metohija.
Drecun also explained Serbia’s stance and position on Kosovo-Metohija which the guests were particularly interested in. Drecun said that the Kosovo-Metohija issue is the state’s biggest challenge because the attempt of a national minority to forcibly establish its own state is against international law and United States Security Council Resolution 1244. The PFG Head explained that that is unacceptable and the Republic of Serbia is trying to find a peaceful, compromise solution to the Kosovo-Metohija issue. “The Kosovo precedent already had a negative impact on other countries such as Spain where Catalonia is also trying to gain independence and some African countries had had similar problems where ethnic groups had tried to forcefully seize parts of the territory of existing states.” Drecun said that if violence were accepted the world would descend into anarchy so the Republic of Serbia is doing its utmost to make sure the situation is resolved peacefully and respects the sovereignty and integrity of every country.
“The support of countries which do not recognize the self-declared state of Kosovo is very important to us, and we expect a retraction from the countries that have done so.” Drecun took the opportunity to thank Kenya, Uganda and Botswana for not recognizing the independence of Kosovo.
“Speaking of defence, security and economic cooperation, we are always open to it and our Parliament supports any and all activity of this kind.” Drecun said that the Republic of Serbia has the capacities for the development of military industries and education of military staff of other countries, as well as prospective healthcare cooperation. The PFG Head said he hoped that defence and security would be the sphere to strengthen Serbia’s bilateral relations with African countries and that the delegation of the Kenyan National Defence College would help promote strengthening relations and developing cooperation with Serbia.
