National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs met with the Italian Ambassador to Serbia, Luca Gori, to discuss the upcoming visit of an Italian Parliamentary delegation to the National Assembly, as well as current topics related to the process of electing REM Council members and the adoption of amendments to the Law on the Unified Electoral Roll.
The visit of the Italian parliamentary delegation, scheduled for the end of next month, is testament to the good and continuous parliamentary cooperation between Serbia and Italy, Kovacs and Gori agreed.
In the course of the conversation, Elvira Kovacs informed her guest about the current situation in the process of electing REM Council members, stressing that it is necessary to ensure that the rights of national minorities are respected as well as the will of a clear majority of national councils of national minorities, which, in accordance with the law, have designated two of their candidates for this body.
Kovacs assessed that the procedure for the election of REM Council members should be completed, a public debate should be organised and the 18 candidates for this independent regulatory body should be discussed at the plenary session of the National Assembly, as should the amendments to the Law on the Unified Electoral Roll.
The officials also touched on the adopted EP Resolution on Serbia, as well as the prospects for Serbia's European integration and the possibility of opening Cluster 3 in the coming period.
