Deputies’ Groups Chairpersons meet UN Security Council Mission

A UN Security Council Mission, headed by Belgian Ambassador, Johan Verbeke, today met chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of Assembly Deputies’ Groups at Assembly House.

The acting chairwoman at the First Sitting of the National Assembly, Borka Vucic, welcomed Mission members and underlined that the National Assembly had held nine debates on the issue of Kosovo and Metohia since 2001, and had adopted several declarations, resolutions and decisions. She reiterated that all these discussions were based on the fact that Kosovo and Metohia was ‘an integral part of the Republic of Serbia, a fact confirmed by UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and other international documents.’ She especially stressed that the National Assembly was ‘absolutely prepared to assume its portion of responsibility in the process of resolving the issue of Kosovo and Metohia based on international law and in line with democratic values of the modern world.’ Ms Vucic went on to conclude that the meeting was ‘another effort in that direction.’

Deputies’ Groups chairpersons expressed their commitment to an impartial and realistic solution for Kosovo’s future status, as well as one that would ensure stability and lasting peace in the region. The Serbian side said that any solution for Kosovo and Metohia would have to be found ‘within the borders of Serbia,’ as well as that ‘accepting the Martti Ahttisaari plan, providing for supervised independence, would entail an infringement of international law and the UN Charter.’ It was stressed that at least five Deputies’ Groups in the Assembly supported the view that Kosovo and Metohia ‘can only be an integral part of the Republic of Serbia,’ as well as that the final solution has to be found in adherence to international law.

Assembly officials agreed that the UN Mission’s visit was very important for providing comprehensive insight into the real situation in Kosovo and Metohia, and underlined that negotiations needed to continue. Serbia, it was said, insists on an acceptable solution being found for Kosovo ‘within the terms of UN Security Council Resolution 1244 and the fundamentals of international law;’ the National Assembly would retain an active role in resolving this crucial issue.

Deputies taking part in the meeting to acquaint the UN Security Council Mission with political parties’ views on Kosovo were: chairman of the Serbian Radical Party Deputies’ Group, Tomislav Nikolic; chairman of the Democratic Party Deputies’ Group, Dusan Petrovic; chairman of the Democratic Party of Serbia Deputies’ Group, Milos Aligrudic; on behalf of the G17 Plus Deputies’ Group, Suzana Grubjesic; chairman of the Socialist Party of Serbia, Ivica Dacic; vice-chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party, Nenad Milic; on behalf of the Vojvodina Deputies’ Group, Nenad Canak; and, on behalf of the Roma Party, Srdjan Sajn.
