Danish Parliamentary Delegation Visits National Assembly

The members of the Danish Parliamentary delegation visiting the National Assembly had separate meetings with the members of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee and the members of the European Integration Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Speaking with the members of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee, MPs Marko Djurisic, Stefana Miladinovic, Borisav Kovacevic and Nenad Nikolic, as well as the Head of the National Assembly delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly MP Dragan Sormaz, the Danish parliamentarians were most interested in Serbia’s views on the country’s European integration prospects and Serbia’s place and role in the European security structures.

Marko Djurisic and Dragan Sormaz said that Serbia had the status of EU candidate and it was one of the country’s priorities to achieve full membership by the end of the decade. Marko Djurisic pointed out that Serbia’s participation in European Union peace missions is important for Serbia’s coming closer to the EU, adding that the National Assembly had recently passed a decision on Serbia’s involvement in the EU mission in the Central African Republic. Dragan Sormaz also stressed the importance and mutual interest in intensive cooperation between Serbia and NATO.

The officials also discussed the normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina, emphasizing the importance of implementing the Brussels Agreement and KFOR’s continued engagement on peace and security on the territory of the southern Serbian province. As regards the political situation in Ukraine, the parliamentarians agreed that only dialogue can produce a lasting and sustainable solution.

The meeting with the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the European Integration Committee focused on Serbia’s EU accession process. The Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Aleksandra Djurovic stressed Serbia’s firm commitment to EU membership, thanking the Danish delegation for the support their country lends Serbia on its road to the European Union. Djurovic went on to highlight the role civil society plays in the membership talks.

The members of the two delegations also spoke about the human and minority rights situation in Serbia, gender equality and representation of women in both parliaments, as well as regional cooperation.

The Danish parliamentarians were interested in the situation in Kosovo-Metohija to which the Foreign Affairs Committee Chairperson responded by emphasizing Serbia’s commitment to the implementation of the Brussels Agreement, stating that the normalization of the life of the Serbian community in Kosovo-Metohija is a priority.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Chairman of the European Integration Committee Laszlo Varga, and the following members of the two committees: Irena Aleksic, Zlata Djeric, Dr Aleksandra Tomic, Stefana Miladinovic, Vera Paunovic and Biljana Pantic Pilja.
