Czech Senate Committee on EU Affairs Delegation Visits National Assembly

In the course of its visit to the National Assembly, the delegation of the Committee on EU Affairs of the Czech Senate, headed by Committee Chairman Miroslav Krejci, had separate meetings with the members of the European Integration Committee and the members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Czech Republic.

The members of the European Integration Committee and the Czech Senate delegation were both pleased by the traditionally good relations between the two countries noting that there is room to further bilateral, as well as economic and cultural cooperation.

The members of the two committees exchanged experiences on European integration noting how important the Czech experience in the area is for Serbia. European Integration Committee Chairman Aleksandar Senic informed the Czech Senate delegation on the work and duties of the Committee he chairs thanking the Czech Republic for the support it offers Serbia on its road to the European Union. Senic emphasised the historical significance of the moment Serbia is in at present and the role the European Integration Committee has in the accession process, hoping it would be completed during the current assembly legislature.

The members of the Czech delegation had questions about the representation of national minority MPs at the National Assembly and Serbia’s cooperation with the diaspora. The members of the two delegations exchanged experiences and opinions on the participation of civil society organisations in the EU membership talks and the public opinion about the EU accession process.

The meeting was also attended by Committee Deputy Chairman Laszlo Varga, Committee members Vera Paunovic and Dusica Stojkovic and Committee deputy members Jelisaveta Pribojac and Mirjana Andric.

In the meeting with the delegation of the Czech Senate Committee on EU Affairs, the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Czech Republic Veroljub Arsic and PFG members Dr Gordana Zoric, Dragan Jovanovic, Ljibuska Lakatos and Velimir Stanojevic highlighted the deep connection between the Serbian and Czech people. They also pointed out that there is room to intensify interparliamentary cooperation within the Parliamentary Friendship Group’s activities.

The officials emphasized the significance of the cooperation achieved between the regions and local self-governments in Serbia and the Czech Republic. They opined that the Czech EU accession experience is important for Serbia not only when it comes to the parliament’s role in the process, but as regards the adoption of European standards at the regional and local level as well.
