Cotric at 31st General Assembly on Orthodoxy
The head of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, Aleksandar Cotric, took part the organisation’s 31st General Assembly, in the Italian city of Palermo, 27 June to 1 July 2024.
In his keynote address, the Secretary General, Greek MP Maximos Charakopoulos, spoke of the activities between the two assemblies, as well as plans and activities for the current and next year. A key moment of the assembly was the election of Romanian MP Ioan Vulpescu as the new president, which symbolizes significant progress and lays the foundation for future IAO initiatives and guidelines.
The main topic of the General Assembly was "Evaluation of the conclusions of the international political conference on Christian values of the IAO, with a special focus on facing new challenges." In the course of the session, emphasis was placed on the challenges that the Orthodox world is facing, including Christian values in society, politics, as well as state interests.
In his address, MP Aleksandar Cotric said that the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy is needed more today by the Christian world and the world in general than thirty years ago when it was founded. Referring to the tragedy of wars that bring only misfortune, he pointed out that the Orthodox world functions as a single organism. He emphasised that the Republic of Serbia is a country that is ready to always advocate for peace and stability.
It was also stressed that it is crucial for IAO to consider and promote Christian values in the modern world, which requires continuous adaptation and innovative approaches. IAO remains committed to its mission and continues to play an essential role in international efforts for peace, justice and the preservation of Christian values around the world.
