Conference on Cold War Alliance and US Military Assistance to Yugoslavia
The National Assembly House hosted a conference today, entitled: “Cold War Alliance: US Military Assistance to Yugoslavia, Seventy Years After (1951-2021)”, co-organised by the National Assembly and the Serbian-American Friendship Congress, with the support of the Institute for Contemporary History.
Prof. Dr Vladimir Marinkovic said that these days saw a number of events geared toward improving bilateral relations between Serbia and the US, reminding the assembly that tomorrow, 25 September, marks the 77th anniversary of Operation Halyard when the Yugoslav Army rescued more than 500 US and other allied airmen, once again demonstrating solidarity and bravery.
US Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Anthony Godfrey said that, just like 70 years ago, the US and Serbia once again face joint threats. The then US Ambassador to Yugoslavia, George Allen and Josip Broz Tito, signed an agreement on military cooperation, which provided Yugoslavia with military support and equipment and laid the foundation for our bilateral cooperation, which is often forgotten. Ambassador Godfrey thanked the organisers of this conference, as well as the Institute for Contemporary History, for keeping the memory of this historic event. The US will continue to be a partner to Serbia and will continue to improve military relations and cooperation, said Godfrey.
The participants of the conference were also addressed by Commanding General David H. Tabor, Head of the Peacekeeping Operations Centre Colonel Dr Mirjana Milenkovic and EWB President and Founder, member of the Trilateral Commission Executive Committee and Chairman of the Serbian National Group of the Trilateral Commission Jovan Kovacic.
AN exhibition of paintings with the theme of the Cold War Alliance and US military assistance to Yugoslavia, seventy years after (1951-2021) was opened in the Central Hall of the National Assembly House before the beginning of the conference.
