Children’s Day at National Assembly

The National Assembly marked Universal Children’s Day, 20 November, by a Children’s Session co-organized by the Committee on the Rights of the Child, UNICEF and the organization Friends of the Children of Serbia.

The Children’s Session was opened by Deputy Chairperson of the Committee on the Rights of the Child Milena Bicanin who said that the chosen topic – violence against children, is of paramount importance for the society today. She reminded the attending that the right to life, growing into adulthood, education and difference are universal human rights which are worth fighting for. Violence is the bane of any society and peer violence will not be tolerated or borne, said Bicanin.

“We are here today to hear what these young people have observed, what conclusions they have drawn about violence because they are taking part in the drafting of a strategic document which should define the situation in our society and send a message how to break the cycle of violence. It is my message to fight for personal dignity, to ask adults for support and to act responsibly and consistently”, concluded Bicanin.

At the Children’s Session, attended by students, members of the Committee on the Rights of the Child, members of the Committee on Labour, Social Issues, Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction, representatives of UNICEF Serbia, Government’s Council for Child Rights and representatives of the relevant ministries, the organization Friends of the Children of Serbia presented the results of the research it conducted where children, especially those from vulnerable social categories, spoke about violence and gave suggestions how best to tackle it.

The Children’s Session was organized to promote the mechanisms for the protection of children against violence and prepare a new strategic framework to handle this type of violence.

Universal Children’s Day, 20 November, was established by the UN General Assembly in 1954.
