Brnabic Announces Opening of Serbian Embassy in Latvia, For All Baltic States

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabic, spoke today with her Latvian counterpart, Daiga Mierina, about, among other things, Serbia's European integration and on the occasion emphasised that it is of strategic importance to open a Serbian embassy in Riga for all Baltic states.

"I hope that such a decision will send a strong signal and help improve our relations in the future," Brnabic told reporters after the meeting.

As she said, Latvia's support is extremely important on the path to the EU. "Serbia's strategic priority is to become a full member of the European Union. We have a very ambitious goal to complete all reforms by the end of 2026. My task, as Speaker of Parliament, is to strengthen relations between the Serbian and European Parliaments, as well as the Serbian Parliament with the parliaments of individual EU member states," Brnabic said at a press conference.

She said that, in her opinion, there has not been enough communication between Serbia and the Baltic states, which is why Serbia made a strategic decision to work more to improve relations and communication with both Latvia and the other Baltic states.

She recalled that a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Serbia and Latvia in 2022, and announced that a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries’ chambers of commerce should be signed soon.

The two also discussed strengthening cooperation between the institutions of the two countries, with Brnabic extending an invitation to the Latvian Speaker of the Parliament to visit Serbia. "We have formed a Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Baltic States in the National Assembly which is a testimony to the importance we attach to improving parliamentary dialogue with Latvia, as well as other Baltic states," said Brnabic.

The Speaker of the Latvian Parliament, Daiga Mierina, said that she is pleased with the decision to open a Serbian embassy in Riga and that she is honoured that Serbia chose Latvia to open the central embassy for the Baltic states.

After the meeting, Brnabic and Mierina laid wreaths at the Freedom Monument in Riga, erected in 1935 to commemorate the soldiers who died during the Latvian War of Independence between 1918 and 1920. Today, it represents a symbol of Latvia's independence, where official ceremonies are held.
