At its twelfth session, the Board of Inquiry Charged with Ascertaining the Truth about New-born Babies Abducted from Maternity Wards in Several Serbian Cities, held on 21 October, interviewed officials of Social Welfare Centres.
At the invitation of the Board of Inquiry, the session was attended by Slavojka Stojiljkovic, legal officer, and Radomir Jeftic, head of the Krusevac Social Welfare Centre; Divna Stojanovic, social worker with the Children Without Parental Care Protection Team of the Leskovac Social Welfare Centre; Ljubisa Zivkovic, head of the Saint Sava Social Welfare Centre, Nis; and Jovan Kocis, head of the Novi Sad Social Welfare Centre.
The social welfare officials explained the adoption procedure for abandoned children, for children whose mothers give them up for adoption at maternity wards, as well as for children whose mothers disappear from maternity wards, leaving their children, and having previously given false personal data.
Special attention was paid to the lower age limit for children being adopted, situations where both the adoptee and the adopter live in the same municipality, and adoption of children directly from health care institutions. Adoption by foreign nationals is handled by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Policy, and is rare in practice, the session heard.
