Arezina: Serbia Views Romania as Neighborly and Friendly Country

The members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Romania, headed by Radovan Arezina, met today with the Romanian Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Silvia Davidoiu to discuss strengthening parliamentary cooperation, infrastructure and economic projects.

At the very beginning of the meeting, the Ambassador said that the Romanian Parliament set up a Friendship Group with Serbia only a few days ago, though the Parliament itself was constituted in December of last year. The group consists of a large number of MPs from the different parties making up the Romanian Parliament, headed by Gheorghe Simon from the Social Democratic Party, the largest party in the Parliament, and including Ognjen Kutic, representative of the Serb minority in Romania. The Ambassador stressed that her goal is to revitalise parliamentary relations and contacts, both through an exchange of visits and cooperation. She said that there are objective reasons why there have been no parliamentary contacts from the Romanian side in the previous three years - in addition to the pandemic there were the presidential and parliamentary elections in Romania to consider, which focused political activities on internal campaigns. "It is unacceptable that we do not have close contacts, at all levels, given that we are neighbouring countries, and I hope that you will accept my enthusiasm to strengthen our bilateral relations," Davidoiu said.

Radovan Arezina said that it was with special pleasure that he took the post of Head of the PFG with Romania, considering that he comes from Kladovo - border crossing with Romania. He used the opportunity to present the attending members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, saying that they are respectable members of all the parties making up the National Assembly’s current legislature. On behalf of the Group and the National Assembly, he thanked Romania for its principled position as regards Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. "We know that it is not always easy to be on the Serbian side, but Romania stood by us on this issue, and on behalf of the Serbian people, I thank you for that. I am especially glad that the friendship between Serbia and Romania survives, regardless of the changing political options", said the PFG Head. Arezina also talked with the Ambassador about the revitalisation of roads, Pan-European Corridor VII, reconstruction of the Kladovo - Donji Milanovac, Pozarevac – Kostolac road which will lend a big impetus to the infrastructural relations between the two countries, given the large number of trucks from Romania and Europe crossing these sections. "Together we can do a lot, it is up to us to emphasise and propose different types of economic cooperation, to promote border cooperation projects and raise our relations to the highest level."

Davidoiu stated that since her arrival, four months ago, when she presented her credentials to the President of the Republic of Serbia, she talked with him about priority infrastructure projects, the Timisoara-Pancevo road, re-establishing the railway connection between Serbia and Romania as well as the waterway (river transport) and connecting the ports of Novi Sad-Constanta. The Ambassador also mentioned the European Union’s IPA CBC project which, among other things, is oriented toward strengthening cooperation between border crossings and can bring multiple benefits to the Republic of Serbia. She added that Romania wants to cooperate with all of Serbia, not just the border areas.

MP Milenko Jovanov also spoke about infrastructure projects, emphasising the importance of putting the Nakovo-Lunga border crossing into 24-hour operation, as it is fully equipped and ready to accommodate trucks crossing. The Ambassador said that this transition was covered by the IPA programme and would be launched in March next year.

MP Aleksandar Cotric who spoke about the importance of cultural cooperation and Dr Milorad Mijatovic who emphasised the exceptional importance of relations between the two countries also took part in the meeting, as did PFG members Nina Pavicevic, Vuk Mircetic, Nikola Radosavljevic and Zoran Tomic.
