Ackovic and Mihailovic Meet with Representatives of Alliance for Serbian-Russian Social Dialogue

Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Prof. Dr Dragoljub Ackovic and Committee member Jelena Mihailovic met with representatives of the Alliance for Serbian-Russian Social Dialogue "KOS".

The meeting was also attended by the State Secretary in the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue Olena Papuga.

Representatives of the Alliance gave an overview of the position of the Russian national minority in Serbia. Since this national minority is not concentrated in one territory but is located in different parts of Serbia, they face the problem of preserving their national identity, including the right to official use of language and script. They believe that greater availability of the Russian language in schools would be very important for the preservation of Russian culture. They drew attention to the need to improve the position of the Russian language in the education system of the Republic of Serbia in order to make it more accessible to a wider circle of students who would choose it as their second foreign language. The position of the Roma national minority in Rasina District was also discussed, as well as exercising the right to information in the languages of national minorities.

Papuga informed the attending about the Ministry’s activities on the protection of national minority rights and said that the upcoming competition for the allocation of budgetary funds for national minorities would be directed toward the realisation of programmes and projects in the field of education.

Mihailovic pointed out that because of the strong ties between the Republic of Serbia and the Russian Federation the Russian language should be nurtured, stressing that the development of economic relations would contribute to an increased interest in learning Russian.

Ackovic spoke about the need for greater involvement of the Russian Minority National Council on the issue of preserving the Russian language. The Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality is certainly interested in contributing to the advancement of the rights of all national minorities in accordance with its scope of work and language is an important means of preserving cultural heritage and national identity.

Katarina Petkovic and Ksenija Radojicic, as well as Larisa Milic, the Director of the Russian National Library in Serbia, attended the meeting on behalf of the Alliance for Serbian-Russian Social Dialogue "KOS".
