Minister without portfolio responsible for European integration Branko Ruzic said that the administrative capacities and expert knowledge of the members of Serbia’s negotiating teams are at an admirable level. He emphasised the important role the National Assembly plays in the process – passes law and controls their implementation.
Serbia’s Chief negotiator with the EU Tanja Miscevic informed the Committee members about the three meetings held on the screening of chapters 32, 23 and 24 – financial control, rule of law, area of freedom, security and justice. She also added that the European Commission is expected to submit a report on previous meetings which would serve as recommendation for the drafting of negotiation action plans.
Miscevic said that the wider negotiating team comprises about 2000 people, while the core team is still to be set up. According to the European Commission the negotiations with the European Union last between 3 and 5 years, added Miscevic.
Discussing the Resolution on the role of the National Assembly and principles in the negotiations on the accession of the Republic of Serbia to the European Union, the Committee members agreed that, in line with said Resolution, the National Assembly should be kept informed on the Government’s negotiating positions so that it could provide its opinion.
The Committee sitting also touched on the important role of the civil sector and how to include it in the negotiation process.
