28th Sitting of the Culture and Information Committee

On 22 October, the members of the Culture and Information Committee held a joint sitting with the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region to discuss preserving cultural identity in the diaspora.


Milica “Mila” Pivnicki Mulroney, wife of former Canadian Ambassador to Serbia Brian Mulroney, esteemed member of the Serbian diaspora in Canada, addressed the committees on the topic.

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Prof. Dr Vladimir Marinkovic greeted Mila Mulroney and her husband Brian Mulroney on behalf of National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic and himself, while the Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Miodrag Linta and the Head of the PFG with Canada Zoran Bojanic gave keynote addresses.

Mila Mulroney, as an esteemed member of the Serbian diaspora in Canada, spoke about how to preserve the cultural identity of the Serbian people in the diaspora. She stressed that multiculturalism is very important in Canada as a state that believes in the rule of law, democracy and freedom of thought, adding that cultural diversity can be a boon to any state if treated properly.

Milica “Mila” Pivnicki Mulroney hails from Novi Becej and as an esteemed member of the Serbian diaspora was awarded the Knight of St. Sava Order of Diplomatic Pacifism. In cooperation with the Archives of Zrenjanin and Novi Becej and Ambassador Dr Ljiljana Niksic, the Municipality of Novi Becej prepared a book entitled “Country of Mila’s ancestors – the Pivnicki family in the history of Novi Becej”.

The joint sitting was attended by the members of the PFG with Canada, Canadian Ambassador in Serbia H.E. Kati Csaba, ambassadors of Belgium, Iraq, Qatar, Morocco and Algeria, representatives of the diplomatic corps, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Municipality of Novi Becej.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Mirko Krlic and attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: MA Jadranka Jovanovic, Aleksandar Jugovic, Dragana Kostic, Stanija Kompirovic, Prof. Dr Marko Atlagic, Mladen Lukic, Snezana Paunovic, Natasa Mihailovic Vacic, Haji Milorad Stosic and Djordje Vukadinovic.
