22nd Sitting of the Health and Family Committee

At the sitting held on 15 April, the Health and Family Committee discussed the Bill amending and modifying the Law on Protection of Citizens against Infectious Diseases, submitted by a group of 234 MPs.

On the behalf of the submitters, the Bill was elaborated by Committee member Prof. Dr Mileta Poskurica. He said that the proposed amendments and modification to Law result from the strong anti-vaccine campaign conducted mainly via social networks, to which the expert public’s unanimous reaction was that it had to be stopped by a pro-active response of medical experts. Thus, the proposed amendments and modification to Law define vaccination as a preventive healthcare method and the decision to vaccinate or not vaccinate a child is made by its physician, not parent of guardian, said Prof. Dr Mileta Poskurica.
The Committee members were unanimous in the opinion that the goal of the proposed amendments and modification of Law is a high rate of immunisation and protection of children’s health and unanimously adopted the Bill amending and modifying the Law on Protection of Citizens against Infectious Diseases.
The sitting was attended by State Secretary at the Ministry of Health Prof. Dr Berislav Vekic and a representative of the Republic Health Insurance Fund.
The Committee went on to review more than 30 civic petitions it had received in the previous period and, based on the proposal of the Working Group for the processing of civic petitions, decided how to process them further.

The sitting was chaired by Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, Committee Chairperson.
