21st Sitting of the Environmental Protection Committee

At the sitting held on 24 November, the Environmental Protection Committee was briefed on the European Commission’s Report, the part concerning Chapter 27, and reviewed the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection activity reports, the parts concerning environmental protection, for the period covering November 2014 to July 2015.


Stana Bozovic, State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, briefed the MPs on the part of the European Commission’s Report concerning Chapter 27.

In the course of the ensuing discussion the Committee members mostly focused on the implementation of regulations concerning waste management, industrial pollution, chemicals, air and water quality and environmental protection. Stana Bozovic said that areas concerning climate change have achieved the most progress, reminding that Serbia had submitted its Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) as expected by the 2015 Paris agreement the objective of which is to reduce emissions at the level of the entire economy by 9.8% by 2030, compared with emissions recorded in 1990.

The MPs also discussed the degree of harmonisation achieved with the EU legal regulations and future plans as regards harmonisation and implementation of regulations, as well as possible challenges to said implementation. Gordana Petkovic, Head of the Ministry’s International Cooperation Sector, spoke about legislation relating to environmental protection, stressing that the area requires additional efforts to be invested into boosting the efficiency of the involvement and consultation with the public in the decision-making process concerning environmental protection, especially at the local level.

In addition to the Committee members, the sitting was also attended by assistant ministers of agriculture and environmental protection Aleksandar Vesic, Environmental Planning and Management Sector, Zeljko Pantelic, Environmental Inspection sector, Slobodan Erdeljan, Environmental Protection Sector, as well as representatives of civil society through the Green Chair mechanism.

Following the discussion, the Committee decided to accept the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Activity Information concerning environmental protection for the period November 2014 – January 2015, February – April 2015 and May-July 2015.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Dr Branislav Blazic.
