18th Sitting of the Environmental Protection Committee

At the sitting held on 20 February, the Environmental Protection Committee discussed part of the 2011 Report on the condition of the environment in the Republic of Serbia – Natural biodiversity and environmental protection system subjects.

The Director of the Environmental Protection Agency, Momcilo Zivkovic, presented the Report on the natural biodiversity and environmental protection system subjects, while Lidija Amidzic, professor of applied ecology at Singidunum University, spoke about natural biodiversity and endangerment of natural resources. She warned that the environment in Serbia is not protected since the number of endangered species is on the rise, warning that biodiversity is speedily eroding and 25% of plant species are endangered. The country lacks specific actions aimed at conserving biodiversity because the state’s commitment to conservation is, she believes, merely declarative.
In the discussion, the Committee members voiced numerous complaints, declaring the presented Report partial and incomplete.
The Committee did not vote on the Report because it lacked decision-making quorum.

The sitting was chaired by the Committee Chairperson, Milica Vojic Markovic.
