18th Sitting of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee

At the sitting held on 10 October, the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee considered the Ministry of the Interior activity information for the periods October – December 2017, January – March and April – June 2018, as well as the Ministry of the Interior Report on the security situation in the Republic of Serbia for the periods January – June and July – December 2017, as well as January – June 2018.

The activity information and Report on the security situation in the Republic of Serbia for said periods were presented by Minister of the Interior Dr Nebojsa Stefanovic. Speaking of the Ministry’s activities on the suppression of crime, drug smuggling and trade he said that 839.5kg of drugs were seized in the first six months of 2018, as well about 366,000 different narcotics. Speaking of organized human trafficking and smuggling, internal human trafficking is still dominant in the Republic of Serbia where six criminal charges had been filed against 10 persons. In the field of suppressing human trafficking, 27 criminal charges were filed against 57 persons. Criminal offences against life and limb have gone down by 5%.

The period of January – June 2018 saw a 6.5% increase in reporting domestic crime, the result of the campaign “Stop to domestic violence” the Ministry of the Interior conducted in late 2017 to encourage victims of domestic violence to report it.

Public order and peace in 2018 has been kept even with the series of big musical, cultural and sporting events that took place in the period.

The state-of-play of ground security on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija was marked by the murder of Oliver Ivanovic, the investigation of which was hindered by EULEX, KFOR and KPS which, despite the many urgings by Serbian investigative authorities, refused to exchange relevant information which resulted in the launching of a parallel investigation.

Minister Stefanovic said that overall crime has gone down by 3% compared to last year, while juvenile crime has dropped by 9.4%.

Stefanovic said that public awareness of traffic safety and the consequences of reckless driving needs to be raised because according to the report traffic accidents have gone up by 7% compared to the same period last year.

The Committee adopted both the items on the agenda by majority vote.

The sitting was attended by Police Director Vladimir Rebic and state secretaries at the Ministry of the Interior Milica Catic and Biljana Popovic Ivkovic.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairperson Marija Obradovic, and was attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Momcilo Mandic, Balsa Bozovic, Borisav Kovacevic, Miroslav Lazanski, Marko Djurisic, Nenad Mitrovic, MA Igor Becic and Aleksandar Markovic.
