18th Sitting of the Culture and Information Committee

On 9 December, the Culture and Information Committee and the Committee on Information of the AP Vojvodina Assembly held a joint sitting in Novi Sad.

The sitting focused on the preparation of the law on public media services and the cooperation between the National Assembly’s Culture and Information Committee and the Committee on Information of the AP Vojvodina Assembly.
Opening the sitting, the Chairman of the Committee on Information of the AP Vojvodina Assembly, Dusan Jakovljev said how pleased he was that the two committees were holding a joint sitting in Novi Sad, stressing that the goal of the citizens of Vojvodina was to exercise their right to information.
The Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Culture and Information Committee, Vesna Marjanovic said that the National Assembly was expected to have on its agenda a set of media laws next year, the preparation of which started as part of the media reform and media strategy. These laws will have a significant impact on the media scene in general, the status of the media service and the position of the media, said Marjanovic. Public service funding is often the topic of discussion and next year’s budget has already allocated funds for the financing of the media services. The Committee Chairperson also added that the National Assembly MPs should know the opinion of the AP Vojvodina Assembly members when the set of media bills is put before the National Assembly for deliberation, to allow room for some of the regulations to be improved.
The Director of Radio Television of Vojvodina Srdjan Mihajlovic spoke of the work and funding of the public services stressing that he expected the importance of both public services to be equally assessed.
Committee member Sasa Milenic spoke of the need to decentralise the media system, and Committee member Jelena Trivan reminded that the media strategy was binding and meant decentralisation, independence of the public services and privatisation of the media and the state withdrawing from media ownership, tenets that all should abide by.
Committee members Milorad Stosic and Dejan Rajcic and AP Vojvodina Assembly Information Committee member Robert Kolar also took part in the debate on public service funding and media privatisation.
The sitting was also attended by Smilja Maksimovic of the Provincial Secretariat for Culture and Public Information.
The two committee chairpersons discussed future cooperation and proposed to hold the next joint sitting once the media bills enter assembly procedure.

The sitting was chaired by Vesna Marjanovic, Chairperson of the Culture and Information Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and Dusan Jakovljev, Chairman of the Committee on Information of the AP Vojvodina Assembly.

The sitting was held with the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) via project Strengthening the Oversight Role and Transparency of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.
