17th Sitting of the Committee on Labour, Social Issues, Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction

At the sitting held on 13 May, the members of the Committee on Labour, Social Issues, Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction reviewed the Ombudsman’s 2012 Regular Annual Report.

Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic presented the Report containing violations of civil rights in the sphere of social welfare and labour. He stressed that the majority of civil rights violations related to social inclusion of vulnerable groups, unregistered employment, non-payment of contributions and employment in public companies without previous announcements of vacancies. Though noting an improvement in Roma social status and inclusion of persons with disabilities, Jankovic added that the improvement is still not enough. Jankovic also pointed out that the problem as regards payment of pensions to Serbs in Kosovo remains to be resolved.
In the ensuing debate, the Committee members asked about the cooperation between the Ombudsman and the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Policy, as well as cooperation with social work centres. The Committee members were most interested in the problems the citizens have when attempting to get information on social welfare, discrimination of women at the workplace and the human rights of asylum-seekers.
The Committee will formulate a proposal of conclusions on the Ombudsman’s Report at the next sitting, and forward it to the National Assembly.
The Committee members also considered the civic petitions and proposals it had received and agreed to send the responses to them to the relevant authorities and the submitters of the petitions.

The sitting was chaired by Milica Dronjak, Committee Chairperson.
