14th Sitting of the Culture and Information Committee

At the sitting held on 16 September, the Culture and Information Committee reviewed the National Council for Culture of the Republic of Serbia Activity Information for the period January-December 2012.


The Council’s activities in said period were presented by the Council President, Dusko Paunkovic, Deputy President Vesna Injac Malbasa and Council members Ivana Stefanovic and Slobodan Vujovic.
Presenting the Council’s regular activities, Council President Dusko Paunkovic said that in said period the Council analysed the situation in culture and formulated suggestions and proposals for the development and improvement of cultural activities. Paunkovic said that the Council had initiated the establishment of a working group to draft the proposal of amendments and modifications to the Culture Law and a working group to draft the Bill on the Theatre which is yet to be appointed members. The Council also reviewed the two existing culture development draft strategies, as well as the candidate applications for the status of cultural institutions of special importance, ruling favourably in 52 of the cases.
The Council members also spoke of their unresolved material status. The Committee members commended the work of the National Council for Culture, emphasising the importance of the body’s analysis of the cultural situation which can be used as a solid basis for the drafting of numerous culture-related laws. They also discussed the Public Procurement Law, particularly the segment relating to culture. In addition, they spoke about the funding of cultural projects pointing out the need to set up a transparent project funding system.
The participants of the sitting agreed that a task group should soon be set up to work on the event to mark next year’s 100th anniversary of the death of Stevan Stojanovic Mokranjac.
In the conclusion, the Council representatives said that it is essential for the Council to develop a close cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Media.
The Committee members adopted the National Council for Culture of the Republic of Serbia Activity Information for the period January-December 2012 and decided to forward the Committee’s conclusion proposal to the National Assembly for adoption.
At the sitting, the Committee also adopted the Bill amending the Culture Law, in principle.
