13th Sitting of the Environmental Protection Committee
At the sitting held on 20 February, the Environmental Protection Committee discussed the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Activity Information for the period May-July and August-October 2014.
The sitting was attended by State Secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Stana Bozovic, Environmental Protection Agency Director Filip Radovic and representatives of the Serbian Ionising Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency and the Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia who answered the Committee members’ questions.
The Committee members had questions about the operation of inspection services, frequency of air quality monitoring, work of automatic air quality measuring stations and spending of environmental protection funds at the local level. The Committee members also asked how much attention was focused on the detection of non-ionising radiation.
State Secretary Stana Bozovic said that the problem of the Ministry’s administrative capacities needs to be addressed, viz. hiring more inspectors which is one of the European Union’s chief demands. Bozovic said that the European Union also insists on increased control over and supervision of the implementation of laws.
As regards the spending on environmental protection at the local level, Bozovic explained that local self-governments are obliged to use the so-called eco-budget funds for the purpose they were ear-marked for adding that this matter will be subject to stricter inspection. The local self-governments that do not act in accordance with law will bear the consequences, said Stana Bozovic.
Speaking of cooperation with the civil sector, the State Secretary stressed the crucial nature of the cooperation, saying that the representatives of the civil sector take part in the work of all of the Ministry’s task groups.
Having considered the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Activity Information for the period May-July and August-October 2014, the Committee decided to accept it with no objections.
