10th Sitting of the Environmental Protection Committee

At the sitting held on 22 November, the Environmental Protection Committee discussed the Republic of Serbia 2013 Budget Bill – section 26, Ministry of Energy, Development and Environmental Protection and section 28, Ministry of Natural Resources, Mining and Spatial Planning.

The representatives of the Ministry of Finance and Economy stressed that the budget proposed for next year is restrictive and, consequently, slightly more than 2.7 billion RSD had been allocated for environmental protection i.e. about 0.4% of the entire budget.
The representatives of the Ministry of Energy, Development and Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Natural Resources, Mining and Spatial Planning explained that the two ministries are in charge of environmental protection and that the budgetary funds are at a satisfactory level.
The Committee members asked the ministry representatives many questions primarily about the consequences of the closure of the Environmental Protection Fund considering that it remains unknown how the spending of the so-called green or eco-dinar would be controlled in future. They also asked about the amount of budgetary income from environmental protection fees, what kind of stimulus is given to recycling and similar.
The Committee members deemed the planned budgetary funds for the sphere inexcusably low and asked the representatives of the competent ministries to answer these and other questions at the next sitting, as well as to open a debate on the environmental protection activities planned for next year.
The sitting was chaired by the Committee Chairperson, Milica Vojic-Markovic.
