REGIONAL COOPERATION IN SOUTH EAST EUROPE IN THE EUROPEAN INTEGRATION PROCESS
Cooperation with parliaments of countries of the region unfolds through the Regional Secretariat for Parliamentary Cooperation in South East Europe based in Sofia, Regional Cooperation Council of South-East Europe with a seat in Sarajevo, through the Conference of the European Integration Parliamentary Committees of States participating in the Stabilization and Accession Process of South-East Europe (COSAP), as well as through bilateral relations with the Parliaments of countries of the region.
Regional Secretariat for Parliamentary Cooperation in South East Europe
In the previous period the countries in the region developed very intense cooperation within the Regional Secretariat for Parliamentary Cooperation in South-East Europe with a seat in Sofia.
As a rule, national coordinators for parliamentary cooperation participate at the meetings of this forum for negotiations, consultations, and exchange of experiences; at conferences and workshops on various topics – MPs who are members of competent committees, staff from appropriate parliamentary working bodies, and national coordinators from the countries of the region, members of the Southeast European Cooperation Process: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Turkey, Croatia, Slovenia, and Montenegro.
Workshops were also attended by EU member states’ experts in various areas, representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament, and other international and non-governmental organizations and foundations (often with the support of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation).
Regional Council for Cooperation in South-East Europe
In June 2010, Deputy Speaker Gordana Čomić participated at the Conference of Speakers of Parliaments of Countries of South-East Europe organized in Antalya, Turkey. Prior to the conference, a preparatory meeting was held in March, at the seat of the Regional Council for Cooperation in Sarajevo. Considering the fact that conclusions of Speakers and Deputy Speakers of parliaments from previous conferences pointed out the need for the institutionalization of parliamentary cooperation, feeling that this would contribute to the improvement of cooperation between the countries of the regions well as regional stability, a Working Group for the Institutionalization of Parliamentary Cooperation was established. Deputy Speaker Gordana Čomić is a member of the Working Group. Chairman of the Committee, Laszo Varga, is her Deputy.
National coordinators met in November 2010 in Sofia, at the seat of the regional Secretariat for Parliamentary Cooperation of Countries of South-East Europe, in order to work on documents to be reviewed by the Working Group for the Institutionalization of Parliamentary Cooperation at the first meeting that should take place in February/March 2010.
Conference of the European Integration Parliamentary Committees of States Participating in the Stabilization and Accession Process of South-East Europe (COSAP)
The members of the European Integrations Committee regularly take part in the Conference of the European Integration Parliamentary Committees of States participating in the Stabilization and Accession Process of South-East Europe (COSAP).
On November 23-24, 2009, the European Integrations Committee hosted the Fifth Conference of the European Integration Parliamentary Committees of States participating in the Stabilization and Accession Process of South-East Europe.
Previously, the Committee’s delegation took part in:
- The Fourth COSAP Conference, on March 26-27, 2009 in Cetinje,
- The Third COSAP Conference in Skopje,
- The Second COSAP Conference in Zagreb and
- The First COSAP Conference in Sarajevo.
