Women’s Parliamentary Network Members Talk Empowerment of Women in Political, Public and Social Life with Israeli Experts

The members of the Women’s Parliamentary Network met today with guests from Israel Einat Gan El and Ilana Stein, and representatives of the Israeli Embassy in Belgrade Jenny Sedov and Danijela Pejic.

The WPN members and guests talked about the empowerment of women in political, public and social life and innovations. The Israeli guests came to Belgrade to attend the two-day AFA Summit the central topic of which is the economic empowerment of women, their professional affirmation and the creation of a society of equal opportunities. Einat Gan El and Ilana Stein are experts who help women in the public and private sector, NGOs and the parliaments. Besides listing examples of gender inequality they encountered in practice, they also spoke about their research and its results which clearly demonstrate the need to amend the law and promote education to raise awareness about the problem among the youth. Israel has no Gender Equality Law in fact, rather the Israeli Declaration of Independence guarantees the same social and political rights to all of its citizens, irrespective of religion, race or sex.

The WPN members spoke about the 30% quota for women in the parliament, which puts Serbia ahead of some other European countries, and about gender responsive budgeting.

The participants of the meeting agreed the need to combat the prejudice that women do not want to advance and hold high office and to raise awareness about this problem.

The meeting was chaired by Natasa Mihailovic Vacic, while Dubravka Filipovski, Dr Sanda Raskovic Ivic, Tatjana Macura and Marija Janjusevic also took part.
