Seventh Sitting of the Subcommittee for Monitoring the Agricultural Situation in the Marginal - Most Undeveloped Areas in the Republic of Serbia

At the seventh sitting, held on 25 November, the members of the Subcommittee for Monitoring the Agricultural Situation in the Marginal - Most Undeveloped Areas in the Republic of Serbia reviewed the dangers of nodular dermatitis and other animal diseases, and the situation in livestock breeding.

The situation in livestock breeding as regards animal diseases was presented by Dr Milos Petrovic, Director of the Specialist Veterinary Institute in Nis. He said that since June and the outbreak of nodular dermatitis in the Republic of Serbia, i.e. Bujanovac, the veterinary service has, in cooperation with the local self-governments, the Serbian Armed Forces and the Ministry of the Interior, promptly suppressed the disease and dealt with the damage it caused. 594 heads of cattle were euthanized in 16 municipalities and 60 million RSD was paid out in recompense. About 110,000 vaccines against nodular dermatitis were distributed and all the cattle in the districts of Pcinja, Jablanica, Toplica, Nisava and Pirot were vaccinated in 25 days. Petrovic also said that the Institute in Nis is to open a molecular diagnostics lab which will improve its operation as it will shorten the time for the detection of contagious diseases.

Miodrag Milkovic, Chairman of the Executive Board of the Veterinary Chamber of Serbia, said that the public is poorly informed about nodular dermatitis i.e. lumpy skin disease, and that they have issued appeals as early as February 2016 when the disease appeared in Turkey, spreading to Macedonia and Bulgaria. He also said that some veterinary stations lacked the funds to go out in the field and that they needed financial support, adding that Surdulica and Bujanovac have no veterinary stations. He also urged for pest control because insects play a big role in the spread of the disease among cattle.

Speaking of the state-of-play in the veterinary services, Subcommittee Chairman Milija Miletic said that Serbia has 348 veterinary stations, 624 veterinary clinics, 17 veterinary stations tied up in bankruptcy proceedings and two stations, in Bujanovac and Lebane, not in the privatisation process due to the large transports of animals in these districts. Serbia has about 3500 veterinarians, but the privatisation of veterinary stations has been poorly done.

Gradimir Milosavljevic, doctor of veterinary medicine from Svrljig, commended the veterinarian service in the field noting its professional and responsible response to the outbreak of nodular dermatitis.

The sitting was chaired by Subcommittee Chairman Milija Miletic, and attended by MPs MA Marko Milenkovic, Zvonimir Djokic, Ivana Nikolic and Marija Janjusevic.
