National Assembly Speaker and Korean Ambassador: Restrained Position on Kosovo-Metohija Is Important For Us

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Serbia Jaewoong Lee to discuss the continuation of overall cooperation between the two countries.

Highlighting Serbia and the Republic of Korea’s well-developed political dialogue, Dr Vladimir Orlic added that there is room to further improve interparliamentary relations through the activities of parliamentary friendship groups. He went on to say that there is also potential for the development of economic cooperation, as well as cooperation in the fields of science, energy, education and modern information technologies.

Ambassador Jaewoong Lee agreed that bilateral relations between Serbia and the Republic of Korea are intensive and on a constant rise. He said that, when presenting his letter of credence to the President of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic in March of this year, he had informed him that he would urge for the doubling of trade between the two countries. He also indicated that Korean companies are interested in doing business and investing in Serbia.

The National Assembly Speaker said that Korean investments are very welcome, stating that further economic development and construction of infrastructure are important elements of our state policy, pursued by the President of the Republic Aleksandar Vucic. "That policy also has the unequivocal support of the citizens, as demonstrated in the recent presidential and parliamentary elections", Dr Orlic pointed out.

Speaking about the current situation, the National Assembly Speaker said that the National Assembly would have its First Special Sitting on 13 September, dedicated to the Report on the process of negotiation with the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government in Pristina, at which the President of the Republic of Serbia would address the Assembly.

He particularly emphasised the daily pressures faced by Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija. "Pristina ignores the obligations from the signed agreements and flagrantly endangers the elementary security of the Serbian people", Dr Orlic pointed out, adding that official Belgrade, headed by the President in the talks, is the side that always insists on dialogue, a peaceful solution and responsibility. He stressed that "under impossible conditions, we are trying to reach a solution that will preserve peace for everyone, and certainly protect the Serbian people and their interests." Dr Orlic said that the Republic of Korea’s restrained attitude and understanding for our position on the Kosovo-Metohija issue are important for us.

Ambassador Jaewoong Lee stressed that the Republic of Korea appreciates Serbia's efforts to resolve problems through dialogue and preserve peace and stability in the entire region.

The officials agreed that cooperation between the countries of the Western Balkans is of particular importance, acknowledging the "Open Balkans" initiative, which originated from Serbia, as a good example of regional economic cooperation that also sends a good signal for foreign investments.
