National Assembly Speaker and Japanese Ambassador: Continuing Cooperation, Serbia Keeps Peace for Everyone

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the Japanese Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Takahiko Katsumata to discuss the improvement of bilateral cooperation, possibilities for the additional strengthening of economic cooperation, as well as the current political situation.

The National Assembly Speaker opined that the bilateral relations between the two countries are excellent and that he expected the cooperation between the Serbian and Japanese parliaments to be further intensified in the current legislature.

He went on to say that economic cooperation is at an enviable level and that investments coming from Japan are visible in the large number of companies present in Serbia. "Those investments also bring with them an important scientific and technical research and educational component, which is important for Serbia because we attract and secure the best possible jobs for our people," stressed Dr Orlic. He added that the state is particularly committed to further economic development and attracting foreign investments, as that is one of the most important elements of our state policy. He especially emphasised Serbia's gratitude for the financial aid and support Japan allocated in the previous years.

Ambassador Katsumata stressed that Serbia and Japan enjoy a long tradition of friendship, with this year being the 140th anniversary of the establishment of friendly relations between our two countries. He agreed that, in addition to the existing political dialogue between the two countries, economic cooperation is also very important. The Ambassador said that Japan would continue to invest in Serbia and support the sustainable development of our country through investments into projects that contribute to environmental protection, green transition and renewable energy sources. He also stressed that Japan supports our European path and all the socio-economic measures Serbia implements in the European integration process.

The National Assembly Speaker also informed the Ambassador about the current situation in Kosovo-Metohija, stressing that the Serbian people face daily pressures and threats caused by the irresponsible and dangerous moves of the Provisional Institutions in Pristina. He added that Serbia’s leadership, headed by President Vucic, is pursuing a policy that ensures peace and stability for everyone, at the same time protecting our state and national interests.

The Japanese Ambassador said that he is aware of the complexity of the situation in Kosovo-Metohija, welcoming Belgrade's constructive approach to dialogue which he believes to be the only way to reach a sustainable solution and preserve stability in the region.

The officials also opined that "Open Balkans" is an outstanding example of successful cooperation, and as an idea that came from Serbia is a strong proof of our determination to develop together as a region and proof of the role that Serbia plays as key guardian of stability in the Western Balkans.
