National Assembly Speaker Opens Public Hearing on National Assembly on Road to European Integration

“Most of the National Assembly’s activities in the past few years have been directed at adjusting Serbia’s legislative and legal system to the legal system of the community we see as our family and, consequently, enabling our citizens to live the life as expected in that family”, said the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic opening the public hearing on “The National Assembly on the Road to European Integration”.

Reminding that a great number of adopted acts came from the European agenda, Djukic Dejanovic pointed out that since 2010 each bill contained confirmation that it complied with European legislation. “These are laws on restitution, financing of political activities, rehabilitation in a word laws that have nominated us to be qualified as the champion of European integration”, stated the National Assembly Speaker.

Summarizing the National Assembly’s European aspirations, she said that, in the course of the almost completed mandate, the MPs confronted opinions for and against the European Union at the sitting of the European Integrations Committee. The Speaker said that Winston Churchill’s slogan was the starting point of many of the differences in our attitudes, stating that “the EU is not a sofa for us to rest on, but a desk to work on diligently and thus present ourselves as equal partners in the European family”.

“Those who see the EU as a sofa to recline on do not believe it comfortable, while the others who see it as a working desk think differently and are looking forward to that which will make us better” deemed the National Assembly Speaker adding that both opinions are legitimate.

Slavica Djukic Dejanovic stated that once the Stabilisation and Association Agreement comes into force the Assembly will create a joint committee comprising Serbian MPs and their colleagues from the European Parliament.
