National Assembly Speaker Meets with “Simon Wiesenthal” Centre Director: Thank You for Your Consistent Fight for the Truth

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with the Director of the "Simon Wiesenthal" Centre Efraim Zuroff and Israeli Ambassador to Serbia Yahel Vilan. Dr Orlic took the opportunity to thank Mr. Zuroff for his consistent struggle and enormous personal commitment to preserving the truth about the suffering during World War II, especially during the brutal attempts of revisionism against Serbian and Jewish victims.

"I would like to especially thank you for the enormous work and energy you invest into making sure the truth about the terrible magnitude of the crimes the Ustasha forces are responsible for on the territory of former Yugoslavia during World War II do not fall into oblivion," said the National Assembly Speaker.

Stressing that we are faced with various attempts at revisionism on a daily basis, he pointed out that one of the most brutal examples of this is the Croatian authorities' ban on Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic visiting Jasenovac and paying respect to the innocent victims. He thanked Efraim Zuroff for his energetic condemnation of this behaviour of official Croatia, which was heard by the whole world. "That is not the way to treat someone whose grandfather was killed in Jasenovac. I had to react immediately and express a strong protest," said Zuroff.

The host and guests agreed that the construction of the memorial complex at Staro Sajmiste is of exceptional importance and that the country’s support, especially the strong personal support of President Vucic, show the commitment and will to complete the project.

Ambassador Vilan thanked Zuroff for visiting Serbia and confirming the strong bond between the two nations. The National Assembly Speaker stressed that our two peoples are bound by traditional cooperation and strong friendship. "We not only understand each other well, but we have always been historical allies and on the same side. You are more than welcome in our National Assembly, as well as in every other part of Serbia", concluded Dr Orlic.
