National Assembly Deputy Speaker Takes Part in Human Rights Forum - Serbia in 2021

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Elvira Kovacs took part in the Human Rights Forum - Serbia in 2021, organised by the Ministry for Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue on the occasion of the International Human Rights Day.

In her address, Kovacs said that in order to achieve its strategic commitment - joining the European Union, Serbia needs to meet one of the basic political criteria - build stable institutions that will guarantee democracy, rule of law, respect and protection of human rights.

"The National Assembly, the holder of constitutional and legislative power, enacts laws that protect individual and collective rights and freedoms. The National Assembly passes laws that respect the principles of equality, parity and non-discrimination", said Kovacs.

She stressed that it is the institutions’ job to promote patterns of democratic political culture, policy of dialogue and tolerance, where freedom, equality and dignity become values worthy of respect.

Kovacs added that democracy can exist only with the protection of minorities, pointing out that institutional, active protection of minorities is the only way to defend the institutions themselves.

"All too easily do we swear by democratic values, forgetting that democracy is not the rule of the majority or the minority, but the rule of justice. Justice which includes the right to diversity and opposes social autism, provincialism and patriarchal culture", Elvira Kovacs concluded.
